Anime Preview: Gundam Twilight Axis

It’s a Year for Anime and Gundam in particular. After a huge ending for Iron-Blooded Orphans, Thunderbolt Season 2 starting we are now greeted with an upcoming short series based on a Light novel, named Twilight Axis.

axis_promo

The above promotional poster shows you the main characters and mobile suits. We should get some good looking model kits out of this, however, I’m not sure they will be as nice as we hope as the rumours are they are just retooling of older HG kits.

We see the Gundam Tristan, and the Zaku III Kai, though it could be an interesting twist this time…..I think the Zaku is used by the good guys! Most of the story is untold but Here is the blurb.

U.C. 0096, the Earth Federation Forces felt a threat to the existence of “psycho frame” again after the incident surrounding “Laplace’s Box.” In order to approach that mystery, they dispatched an investigation team to the asteroid Axis drifting outside the Earth Sphere. Two civilians participate as members of the research group: Arlette Almage and Danton Hyleg. Both have pasts with government service to the Principality of Zeon and Neo Zeon as an engineer and test pilot. Having infiltrated Axis, the investigators come under attack inside a base where no one should be. Arlette and Dalton are confronted with by an incident they would never have imagined.

Fans of Gundam UC stories should be ecstatic! Another UC series, and set straight after the events of Unicorn Gundam. So to elaborate on rumours I’ve heard online, The Team are attacked by the Gundam Tristan, and Find a Zaku III in the hanger and use that to defend themselves. The team were dispatched to find the remains of the Sazabi left on Axis after Chars Counterattack.

We will have to wait and see how this all plays out, but I’m excited. I’m not sure about 5 x 3 min episodes, and 1 x 8 min episode. This will be a mega short series, but hey it’s quality, not quantity.

See the latest preview here, and leave a comment! Thanks 🙂

Kirky.

Build Log: RX-78 Prototype diorama

This is the first I hope, of many build logs on kits I’m either working on or finished. This time I didn’t have time to update with WIP (work in progress) logs but rather a completed log.

Here in Aus I’m part of a community of builders, which is great as we all share our work with each other on FB, but also challenge each other. Not only egging others on with GBWC entries (see previous post for explanation on that) but with challenge builds!

This is my entry for the most recent one that finished this week, a weathered challenge. I’ve never weathered a kit before and this is my first airbrushed kit also, to quote band of brothers “a day of firsts”…..well 2 months of firsts lol.

The challenge has rules, it started on Jan 6th from memory and completed on the 6th of March. You had to use any High Grade 1/144th scale kit from gundam that you wanted, however it had to be genuine Bandai (fair call) and it had to be weathered, not really damaged but weathered. I opted to include a diorama to present it at the last minute…I didn’t win but I had fun learning!

I started with the 35yth Anniversary Revive HG 1/144 RX-78.2 Gundam, the granddady of all. I decided that it would be a forgotten prototype, left in a maintenance bay after testing and long forgotten since the days of the 1 year war….If you don’t know what that is go and read now before continuing.

IMG_9240.JPG

It’s a basic kit but soooo Good, the Revive line I can highly recommend. It’s basic but well made. I modified it slightly on the head, drilled some holes in the forearms and legs trying to make it more realistic. After that it was straight into painting! A daunting task for newbies like myself.

I wanted to keep the colour scheme simple, white/grey mix of Mr Hobby paints and a dark blue which was a mix of gundam blue and some black added in. I then used Gold leaf enamel hand painted on.

I used 2 types of paint here, Lacquers for the main body and weapon colours like grey/white, blue, black. For the detailed parts like the frame/hands I used an enamel gunmetal by Tamiya, gold leave and chrome silver for detailed parts and scratching.

On the weathering, it was fun! I usually love clean looking kits but making this thing look used and abused was great fun. Scratching was the easiest and the best looking part. I think the shield turned out amazing if I do say so myself.

But I decided last minute to do a Diorama, and I had to find something to use….Luckily a tree in my yard was struck by lightning and a few appliances in the house died….Queue the wifi router sacrificing it’s life haha

I would love to continue writing more details, but I’m tired and I think the pictures are speaking for themselves! The hardest part about weathering is less is more…Hard to get. I think for a first attempt I did ok but obviously as more time goes on and more kits get made I’ll improve.

Here are the final photo’s, I love it. Enjoy guys!!

Anime Review: Iron Blooded Orphans

I’ve taken quite a while to get to this series, and in part that is because I wasn’t sure I’d do a review or even watch it and continue watching it until I finished season 1. Now we are drawing to a close on season 2 and I figured it was a good time to write it up…So here goes!

As usual, here is your disclaimer…..POSSIBLE SPOILERS ahead! I’m not going into a huge amount of plot info as I want you guys to go and watch the series, the best part is you can watch it all on youtube on the Gundam.info channel. They’ve even just started streaming season 1 in dub format….though I’m not mega keen on the english voices, but it makes it easier for some as they hate subtitles.

mobile_suit_gundam_iron-blooded_orphans_poster

This series is set in a future, where a planet like Mars can be inhabited thanks to terraforming. However, there is alot of inequality far worst then you see in current society. If you aren’t from a wealthy background you’re basically trash, you work labour jobs in factories and colonies etc.. Cryse is the main city on mars, and our main cast (as pictured below) are such unlucky citizens, working for the CGS for adults who treat them like filth because they’re parentless kids and only good for dying.

gundam_iron_blooded_oprhans_character

There are many more to the cast but these are the main for season 1 and most of 2. When the main heroine of the story Kudelia hires CGS to take her to Earth so she can change how things are on Mars, the injustices, the inequality, she creates a huge problem in the main antagonists of season 1 are trying to stop her and will crush anyone in there way including the security company.

There are so many good things that are different about this show, and I highly urge you to watch it! But one of the more interesting things about this show is the mobile suit designs, unlike any before. Gundams are obviously the main suit, but there are plenty of other types of suits.

This show has intense violence, like none I’ve seen in a Gundam series before, down to children executing adults at point blank range with a gun to Mobile suit combat with axes and swords. I love that they took the beam weaponry that could overcome everything out of it, and took it back to basic melee combat and firearms were the only way to do things. That doesn’t mean there is no future tech though, alot of the children have been forced to have a surgey which allows them to interface with mobile workers to do work in outer space and on the ground. They can also steer ships with them, and if it allows (as the gundam frames do) interface with a mobile suit. It’s a tech left over from the Calamity war 300 years earlier to which we still at the end of season 2 have no clue was about as we only get fragments.

But what we do know is the large military organisation which is supposedly responsible for peace and order in the galaxy was born out of this event, Gjallarhorn. It seems they originally created the 72 Gundam Frames, and the Alaya-Vijnana System for human interface, but have since prohibited the use and studied in secret, fearing its use against them. The Gundam frames might number  72, but so far we have seen less then 10 in the anime, and maybe 1-2 in side stories from a manga and game. Below is a picture of the basic Gundam frame, each will obviously be tuned for different speed and strength etc.. And some have different features, Like the special System Vidar uses in season 2….go watch to find out that!

gundamframefront

Another great feature of this series, is how they have linked in history and myth, the reason there are 72 Gundam Frames…is there are 72 demons listed in the first section in the magic book the lesser key of solomon! I love series that do this, I love reading Dan brown as he writes based on myth and history.

This series has been awesome and refreshing, something very different a new stand alone series and it was very good to see after what I see was a very big flop series, Reconguista in G. Do yourself a favor, and follow the link below to the first episode and hope that it isn’t blocked in your country.

Kirky,

Gundam Thunderbolt Season 2 update

Foud most of this over on Gundam Kits collection site, It looks like we have a date for the release of Season 2 of the OVA for Thunderbolt which I cannot sit still and wait for.

mobile-suit-gundam-thunderbolt-season-2-1

I love the Universal Century storylines, but this one is just awesome. Bulky looking mobile suits fighting it out amongst the debris…..But wait, it looks like the battle has moved out of the thunderbolt sector and down to Earth. I’m not sure of all the story particulars, but here in the trailer we can see water and atmosphere something that looks like a Pegasus class Assualt carrier like the Albion from 0083 Stardust Memories.

Thunderbolt Trailer 2

The release dates I’ve found are here

  • Episode 5: Friday, March 24, 2017
  • Episode 6: Friday, April 28, 2017
  • Episode 7: Wednesday, May 31, 2017
  • Episode 8: Friday, June 30, 2017

So it looks like our 2 aces will continue to fight it out, Io Flemming will have his new Gundam RX-78 Atlas which is a weird design but it has a rail gun and who doesn’t like a mobile suit sporting a ridiculously overpowered weapon. Darryl Lorenz is back, and his is one I didn’t realise was from this part of the UC, the MS 04 ACGUY which is an amphibious type suit. Hopefully since the Gundam is capable of water battle also we are going to see some amazing fight scenes.

This is going to be another epic 4 part OVA to blow your mind. Keep an eye out for more trailers, and hopefully the Jazz soundtrack will be back.

More to come when I find it guys! Enjoy.

Anime Review: Gundam The Origin OVA

This Anime has just finished it’s First Arc in December 2016, amazingly I wasn’t aware it was going to go further then 4 Episodes. The Unfortunate part though however is that we now have to wait nearly 12 months before the 2nd arc is going to pick up, The Battle of Loum.

SPOILERS AS YOU GO ON….YOU ARE WARNED 😉

As a quick overview of the first few episodes as I don’t want to spoil it all for you, Go watch it on the Gundam youtube channel.

Gundam The Origin, is a prequel to the original Gundam series, Mobile Suit Gundam 0079. It sides heavily with the Zeons at the first 2 to 3 episodes and focuses on Casval Rem Deikun…..And I hear you asking WHO??

vlcsnap-2016-12-20-09h57m50s200

That would be the boy on the left, and his sister Artesia on the right. You’d know them better as Char Aznable and Sayla from the original Gundam.

So in these 4 OVA’s we get the original story of what happened to lead to the one year war of 0079. It’s great to see it in so much detail and learn all about what happened, I had so many questions when watching the Anime. This has answered most of them!

You’ll also run into other characters like Ramba Ral, Tem Ray and Amuro.

vlcsnap-2016-12-20-09h55m26s997

The first episode wasn’t as interesting as I thought, and episode 2 wasn’t much better. Though it explains the name changes as we know that Char has had many names over the Gundam series. Finally in Episode 3 this happens and you reliase how he got the name Char!

vlcsnap-2016-12-20-09h59m23s736

That’s right, basically a duplicate character with different eye colour that he switches with to throw off the Zabi Family pursuing him, and he ends up enrolling in the Military academy they run right under their noses.

We can see here in these pictures, he ends up wearing glasses to hide his eyes, only to have someone give him his famous visor to hide them. He also befriends Garma Zabi, the youngest of the Zabi bloodline.

Episode 3 is way more action packed then the first 2 combined, and still has a lot of plot in it. It basically gives you the reason for the uprising by the colonies, but also the hidden agenda’s of others in the background. We also get our first look at Mobile Workers, the precursors to Mobile suits. The below isn’t that, but its the first shot of a mobile suit being constructed in the series.

vlcsnap-2016-12-20-10h02m20s046

vlcsnap-2016-12-20-09h58m50s188

At the start of Episode 4, you see Char being booted out from the academy and headed for Earth…thinking WTF?? how is the main character getting tossed aside? But in doing so it reveals he had a hand working in Mobile use technologies for Zeonic company and co. Also on Earth he meets someone very important to the series….

vlcsnap-2016-12-20-09h50m07s733

After an escape back to space, we get more of the EFSF side, and the mobile suits being developed there, we don’t actually get to see the very first Gundam… But we do get Amuro’s father Tem Ray and Anaheim Electronics and their involvement including the Early type Guncannon. I love that colour scheme, the Revive HG kit should have come in that colour scheme!

vlcsnap-2016-12-20-09h52m27s869

Dr Minovsky, yes the inventor of the particle or discoverer, is going to defect and help the EFSF apparently. They’re is a rescue/exchange menat to happen which Zeon know all about as we get a little exchange between what is anew design to me, the Bugu and a few Zaku I’s heading to a meeting point across the moon.

vlcsnap-2016-12-20-09h51m38s587

They’re actually Ramba Ral, and the Tri-Stars!!! if you don’t know who they are, please go watch the original series now. They’re heading to meet “him” also known as that “Red Bastard”..Yep you guessed it.

vlcsnap-2016-12-20-09h52m55s000

Char in his Zaku I, in his full Colors. So this team of super stars headed to a meeting point….That pretty much spells disaster for the exchange about to happen. I won’t go into too much detail but the EFSF dispatch the “Iron Cavalry” to help cover them. Once they arrive on the scene they take action to defend the car and fighters in spectacular fashion.

I loved this scene, especially how certain they are that 12 Guncannons should be enough to deal with 4-5 zeon suits…Yeah it’s all down hill from there.

I beg you to go and watch this series, support it by buying the HG Origin kits as that is how the series get made, Bandai get the $$$ through the merchandise. Most of the time I would say nah forget it….but The Gundam franchise is one that is addictive.

Catch ya next time with a Kit update I’m working on, RX-78.2 Gundam Custom colours and weathering.

Gunpla Builders World Cup

So to accompany my last post, there’s this really cool thing that goes along with gunpla. It’s held by bandai and it’s called the GBWC or Gunpla Builders World Cup.

download

It’s a yearly competition held around August with the finals being held in Japan in December. In countries around the world there will be a competition you can enter your build into and compete for 1st, 2nd or 3rd in your category (open, junior etc..) and if you place 1st you get a trip to japan! That’s right, to see how your entry stacks up against the best of the best.

There are rules, only genuine bandai products, certain measurements etc… and the competition is brutal. You may think you’ve got something great and then when you show up….BAM. You think well thank’s for coming. Below are a few pictures as an example of the 2016 entries that caught my eye, A couple of recently made friends from here in australia did really well. Kirin whom I share a love of the Stardust memories 0083 series and the GP01 Gundam Zephyranthes, placed third and Lance placed first for Australia in the open category and did well in Japan.

aus-3rdtrasnamjapan-championopen_a2open_a1

I must admit, I didn’t originally understand why the guy who won overall did with his entry, and then it was explained to me. He created all the Samurai armor by hand and the diorama is actually meant to mimic a scene from Japanese history where 2 Warriors met on a bridge in Kyoto. Hearing the back story and what the guy went through to make it just shows how  big this hobby is and the depth of thoughts and emotions that go into it.

So if you’re game, take it up and see what you got. If you love a challenge you’re in the right place.

My new obsession: Gunpla

Some will be going wow yeah going over your older posts it makes sense, others will be saying….What the hell is a gunpla?

gunpla_logo

Gunpla is just a name for Gundam Plastic models, manufactured by Bandai in Japan. They’ve been going for over 35 years now and the popularity is only on the rise as far as I can see. A lot of this would have to do with the fact it’s also a hugely popular anime that the kits are based on, and apart from being awesome kits the anime is usually pretty epic.

In 2007 when I was visiting japan i sadly wasn’t into this hobby, I was collecting the metal type figurines of super robots. I didn’t realise these aisles of awesomeness were there.

gunpla shopping.jpg

One major difference I believe with Gunpla compared to any other kit, is Bandai’s polycaps. They make it almost needless to use Glue on these kits. You can use the nippers or a knife to cut the puts out and assemble.

So let’s have a quick look at the different scales and grades of kits you have.

SD – Super Deformed. These are the cute bobble headed looking kits. This was my first kit, not very details but fun to put together and a nice easy one to start.

HG – High Grade – 1/144 scale – These kits are the bread and butter of the line up. Most kits will be released in this line in some form with any given amount of variations. These kits are detailed enough, still being fun to build (most of the time unless you get sticker hell) and have a good amount of colour separation without needing to be painted compared to much older kits which I personally haven’t used but have been told weren’t as nice. The current line of kits include things like a shield, rifle or other weapons.

RG – Real Grade – 1/144 scale – This scale is a great one, the cheaper options and size of the HG, whilst having gimmicks and the inner frames of the MG lines. Real grade is just that, It’s bring the mobile suits to real life. Highly detailed and articulated, more accurate colours like multiple shades of white or grey from panel to panel. Some can be finnicky from reviews I’ve read, but overall a great line to get into.

MG – Mastergrade – 1/100 scale – These are highly detailed kits usually including a few to tonnes of accessories. Unlike the previous kits they come with an inner frame, which you assemble and then mount the armor onto. You’ll notice that some kits have a 2.0 marking on them and this is the 2nd run of the kit with improvements to articulation or other fixes.

REBORN 100 – This is a more recent line from Bandai, and features mobile suits you wouldn’t usually see in a 1/100 scale. It’s not far in with only the 6th kit just being released. The main difference is you get the scale and alot of detail, without the inner frame which would be an expensive part of the kit. So far sales seem good and the line is receiving support as it has great kits you don’t usually see getting some love like the recent Bawoo from Zeta Gundam.

PG – Perfect Grade – 1/60 scale – This is the top echelon of Gunpla kits. Much larger scale, but much much more detail. I am yet to attempt one of these kits myself, they are pricey but worth it from what I’ve seen. There aren’t many of them, but usually the most popular hero suits are the ones to get it like the original RX-78.2 Gundam, the Astray Gundam or the 00 Raiser Gundam from Gundam 00. These kits are highly detailed, articulated and beautiful to see. They have tonnes of weapons, and things like LED’s you can install.

Here is a picture I found on the net, of the Grandaddy gundam RX-78 in most of the scales.

scale photo.png

I haven’t mentioned the largest one yet but the 1/48 scale is a mega size. There aren’t many of those released and from what I’ve seen about them in reviews they are a giant HG when assembling.

There is so much you can do with this hobby, from modification and scratch building, to airbrushing (which I have just got setup) or just assemble from the box and glance at the fantastic work you’ve just done.

I highly recommend this to anyone of any age, go to your local hobby store and check out what they have, there is a design to catch anyones eye.

Till next time, Catchya!
